    Life as a 1st Year

First year students are paired with a Big Sib and Grad Group to help them acclimate to graduate school and life in New York City.

Incoming students participate in a week long Research Adventure, where they learn a new scientific technique in small groups.

During their first year, incoming students participate in three rotations in any of our training programs, before deciding on a thesis mentor and lab to join.

Hi, I'm Ashley and I'm a first year Ph.D. Student. So the research adventures are something we offer in the first couple of weeks of graduate school. And this is basically a week long mini rotation in a lab. The research adventure experience I had was in structural biology. And we got to go through the whole workflow of x-ray crystallography, which was a very unfamiliar workflow for me. So a big sib is just sort of a mentor for you to make the process of moving to New York and starting graduate school a little smoother. So I was e-mailed by my big sib before I had moved here. And she just introduced herself to me and said who she was and what lab she worked and stuff. And just said, if you have any questions I'm here to sort of make the process easier. Joke talks are semi-formal presentations where you basically have a board and chalk. So you give like a five minute talk about your previous research experience. And it allows us as a first year group of students to know what everybody else-- what their background is and what they're familiar in. And it's an easy kind of like an icebreaker, easy icebreaker for everybody.
